Despite the massive popularity of the Chromecast, it still isn’t the correct device for everyone. Perhaps that is why were still seeing a host of set top boxes that run Android come out of the woodwork. Like this one that was just unveiled by a company called Satechi. “The Smart TV Box” as it’s being hailed by the company, is a tiny little Android powered TV Box that connects up to your TV and links up to your home network via WiFi or Ethernet, to give you what Satechi is saying is the “ideal solution for users who want to stream digital media onto their televisions.” Although there is already a large number of devices like this one in existence, the Smart TV Box from Satechi just might be the one for you. It boasts some attractive features and specs, and comes along with a matching price point to really sweeten the deal.

Like most other set top boxes, it gives you the power to access all of your home networks local media, and stream it right to the tv. Unlike most though, it uses XBMC(Xbox media center) software for the interface of all your media access, which to be honest is quite possibly one of the best media management apps and sources we’ve ever seen for Android. XBMC not only sports a sexy UI, but it also makes things easy to find, and they even have apps that can be installed onto your other Android devices. Spec wise, the Smart TV Box comes power packed with an unknown 1.8GHz processor, and it also comes with 2GB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage to start you off with a place to keep some media, but should you be worrying about breaching that limit, it has two USB ports and an external SD slot for extra storage via the SD and flash drives, limiting your storage space to as much as you’re willing to buy.

To round things out the Smart TV Box houses a quad-core Mali 400-MO4 GPU, just in case you need some intense graphics processing. Its HDMI compatible and has Bluetooth support and Play Store access(WIN), as well as comes with a nifty little remote that isn’t to obtrusive and weird to handle. (At least by the looks of it) You’ll also find the respective audio port, and a micro USB port for service and support updates it seems. Overall, the Satechi Smart TV Box seems like a pretty great little set up if you’re looking for this sort of device to add to your living room, and you can have one for only $109.99. It’s now live for purchase, and you can pick it up either straight from Satechi or from Amazon. tv_box_main_web tv_box_packaging_image_ports_and_remote_web tv_box_remote_and_monitor_web

Lion Update 10 7 1 Big Improvement

Today Apple released its first update to Mac OS X Lion: 10.7.1. You can read a little about it on Apples site. If youre on Lion already, this update is a must. Here, 10.7.1 runs in glorious silence, quite a difference from my Macs "roaring" (get it? Lion? Roaring?) fans under the initial 10.7.0. Thats a big plus.

Its likely that Apple was working on this update even before Lions initial availability, which means that much of 10.7.1s improvements is stuff that Apple already knew about. And that means that bugs that were found after Lions release could still be present-- but Id expect a lot of them to be fixed in 10.7.2.

If youre on 10.7, Step One is be absolutely positive that you have a current backup. You can go to Time Machines menu and tell it to "Back Up Now" (thats what I did). Step Two is get 10.7.1 via Software Update under the Apple menu. Step Three is restart, which the Installer will insist upon. You might get some disk activity and fan noise immediately after the restart, but it ought to go away in time. You can restart again after that and from then on it ought to be smooth sailing.

You can probably tell that I am not keen on Lion. I prefer Snow Leopard for several reasons, some of which I will write about someday soon. But, if youre already on Lion, youll be happier after installing the 10.7.1 update. Just be sure you have that backup, just in case.

iPhone Software Update iOS 4

Somewhat overlooked in last weeks iPhone 4 pandemonium is the updated operating system for iPhones called "iOS 4". Its available as a free download for existing iPhone and iPod Touch users. (Sorry, it is not available yet for the iPad.) I put it onto my iPhone 3GS and its working fine.

Heres what youll get when you install iOS 4 onto your existing iPhone: (note: iPhone 4 owners can skip this-- the iPhone 4 comes with iOS pre-installed.)
  • Multitasking: in effect, it lets you suspend an app, and come back to it later, just as you left it-- saving you the time it takes to launch it and get to where you were.
  • Folders: you can group apps into folders now. Each folder can hold 12 items. I have two and a half pages of folders, grouped just the way I like them (Navigation, Utilities, Reference, Shopping, Sports, etc.)
  • Improved Mail: you can see all of your Inboxes at once.
  • Digital Zoom for the camera: like the one in Gorillacam, but now built-in.
  • iBooks: you can now buy books from Apples store, and read them on your iPhone or on your iPad. Note: free Winnie the Pooh book is included and the books have the same groovy page-turning animations as on the iPad.

It took about an hour for me to do the update on my iPhone 3GS and I would expect it to take about the same for you. If you have an original iPhone (aluminum back), youre out of luck-- it wont install at all, so dont try. If you have a 3GS its a no-brainer-- go get it, its free.

Heres a link to Apples site where you can learn more about the iOS 4. Heres a link showing how to install it.

Would You Like Some Penis Jokes With Your Pizza

1390843210-boners_and_4-skinsWhen a restaurant introduces a new special, they want the name to be memorable. Brothers Pizza in Cleveland and Akron, Ohio have done a masterful job with one coupon that they call their “oddest and most popular offer.” That’s the “12 boners and 4-skins” deal, where customers get a dozen chicken wings and four potato skins for $10.99. What did you think it was referring to?

Lest you think that this is some kind of mockup, it is not. They offered the same deal back in November, and put the coupon on Facebook.

What do you get with your wings? Toppings include the pizzeria’s very own “Raging Boner sauce, which is a culmination of our Bromade hot as [Hades] hot sauce mixed with our house hot sauce.” Sounds hot.
